My Top Albums of 2011

December 29th, 2011

Choosing 25 albums from the past year proved to be a difficult task. 2011 produced a whole whack load of great music and it was tough to come up with and order the list below. Other than the albums below, there were a bunch that I couldn’t fit in my top 25. Those albums include Lykke Li Wounded Rhymes, Adele 21, Fleet Foxes Helplessness Blues and The War on Drugs Slave Ambient.

2011 proved to be another fantastic year for Canadian music. Leading the way was Drake with his second album Take Care. Other Canadians with good albums this year include City And Colour with Little Hell, Austra with her debut Feel It Break and Arkells with Michigan Left.

Hope you enjoy these albums as much as I did and as always if there was an album you really liked that I didn’t mention, please let me know!

My Soundtrack To 2011

December 23rd, 2011

Similar to 2010, this year has been a fantastic year for music. We saw debut albums from both Gallagher brothers, Cults, and Grouplove. We also heard some of awesome singles from M83, Lana Del Rey, and The Weeknd. Mixed in with these catchy singles and debuts were a bunch of solid albums. Some of those include Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light, Fucked Up’s David Comes To Life and Girls’ Father, Son, Holy Ghost.

As is the case with every year there is always this one song that gets to me that becomes my guilty pleasure. This year that award goes to Katy Perry. Her single ‘E.T.’ was so catchy and was played everywhere I turned that it got tattooed in my head. Also on my playlist are two tracks from Canadian rockers The Sheepdogs. Although their album ‘Learn & Burn’ was released in 2010, they really hit it big this year thanks to winning the Rolling Stone Magazine contest.

The 80 songs below is pretty much a soundtrack to my year. From songs that were released in January right up until December every song on here was played countless amounts of time. Hope you enjoy the list and let me know if there were any songs you really enjoyed that I should check out. Happy Holidays!

Music Monday Roundup – The Strokes, Foo Fighters & Glasvegas

February 7th, 2011

So far 2011 has produced a number of amazing albums. White Lies’ ‘Ritual’, Iron & Wine‘s ‘Kiss Each Other Clean’ and The Decemberists’ ‘The King Is Dead’ are just a few to be named and there are plenty of more great albums to come in this upcoming year.

The Strokes, Foo Fighters and Glasvegas are all set to release their upcoming albums in the spring and are set to release new singles. Glasvegas has already released one single and have just released a second titled ‘Euphoria, Take My Hand‘. The Strokes are ready to release their lead single ‘Under Cover of Darkness‘ on Wednesday but have leaked a 30 second clip and it sounds amazing! This is definitely an album that everyone is looking forward to.

Music Monday – Glasvegas, Foo Fightes & Crystal Castles f. Robert Smith

January 17th, 2011

Today was an absolute great day for stumbling upon new music. Last week I blogged about Glasvegas naming their new album and this past weekend they dropped their new single ‘The World Is Yours’. If this single is any indication of how their new will sound like then we are all in for an amazing treat. This single has all of the previous Glasvegas sound with some new touches that are marvelous. Listen to the full track below.

Next up is the Foo Fighters. About two weeks ago the guys teased fans with a ten second clip of front-man Dave Grohl screaming at the top of his lungs. In a recent interview Mr. Grohl revealed that this upcoming album will be their heaviest album to date and includes no acoustic guitar. That first teaser clip definitely proved to us that he wasn’t joking around and now they have released another teaser clip, this time its roughly 30 seconds. In this teaser it’s clear that they stuck with their sound but put in a little more aggression into, which makes for an awesome tune! This is definitely an album/track/concert that I am looking forward to in 2011. Listen to it here.

And lastly for this Monday evening is Toronto’s own Crystal Castles. This electronic duo have produced two amazing albums (both of which have been on my top album lists) and have grown in popularity in recent years. Today I came across a song from their latest album that is featuring The Cure’s Robert Smith. Their single ‘Not In Love’ is amazing on its own but when I heard the version with Robert Smith singing I was blown away. Alice Glass has an amazing voice and all but with Robert Smith singing those lyrics the song gets even better than the original! Have a listen blow and let me know your thoughts. Happy Music Monday!!
