2008 has been a great year for video gamers. This year we saw a bunch of highly anticipated games get released. We also saw some that came from nowhere and proved to be elite games of 2008. Here is a small list of games that were released this year that almost every gamer got their hands on.
Grand Theft Auto IV
GTA IV is in my opinion the most talked about game of year. From having the release date pushed back to the crazy amounts of copies sold on the first day, it had people talking. Did it live up to its expectations? Of course it did. This game has it all. Your character, Nico, was convinced by cousin Roman to come to the United States to live the American dream of having money, girls and cars. However once Nico arrives he soon finds out that his cousin Roman lied to him and is forced to help his cousin out with his debts. The story line of GTA IV is almost like one out of a movie. There are a number of curve balls that were thrown your way while playing that made you think about how each character is involved in the game. If you have GTA IV for XBOX 360 then you are going to love this. In 2009 Rockstar Games will be releasing an episodic content titled ‘The Lost And The Damned’ which will feature a new character that you play as in a darker side of Liberty City.

Gears Of War 2
Although Gears Of War 2 was only released a month ago, it is clear that it deserves to be on this list. Gears of War 2 saw a number of updates from the first one but from my experience being able to crawl to a spot and be recovered has to be the biggest imporvemt. There were a number of times while playing the game when i was near death that this came in handy, where one of my delta members came and revived me. Another feature which was very useful was using a dead corpse as a sheild. This new feature made it easier to kill of the massive amounts of locusts that were encountered. The online gameplay for Gears Of War 2 is phenomenal. You and a team of friends can complete the campaign online and defeat the locusts together. If you’ve played Gears Of War 2 you know why it’s on this list, if you haven’t i highly recommend picking it up and give it a shot.
Platforms: XBOX 360
Guitar Hero World Tour
GH World Tour is the fourth installment of the Guitar Hero Series and finally allows you to play with a band. To compete with Rock Band, Guitar Hero decided that it was time to add other instruments to the game like drums and a microphone. The first three Guitar Hero’s were a huge success and with the ability to play with a band World Tour will continue the success rate for Guitar Hero. In a battle with Rock Band in music games, Guitar Hero had to come up with something that was unique and innovative that would distance themselves from their competitors. That unique and innovative idea was creating and recording a custom song. Yup, in Guitar Hero World Tour you can write your own song, record it and share it online with friends. I think for that reason alone it deserves to be on this list.
Platforms: PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii
Rock Band 2
Rock Band 2 is the second installment in the Rock Band series and includes that same instruments as the first one. It’s similar to the original Rock Band but with a whole new setlist and improved instruments. The new drums have a metal re-inforced kick pedal, the ability to add cymbals and most notably the velocity-sensitive drum pads. The harder you hit the pads the louder the drums sound it the game. This is a definite added bonus and makes the game that much more realistic. The ability to create a custom setlist also provides the user with the freedom of what his/her band want to play. That is a big difference from the other Guitar Heros where you had to play what was given to you.
Platforms: PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Wii
Far Cry 2
Far Cry 2 is a prime example of a sandbox type of game, allowing you to progress through the game at your own pace. Developers Ubisoft Montreal went the extra mile for this game and sent a team to Africa to capture images and sounds to use in the game to make it as realistic as possible and it shows throughout the game. Far Cry 2 is based in a fictional region of Africa that is involved in a civil war and you are there to find the infamous Jackal who supports the current war by dealing weapons to both sides. While you are on your mission to find the Jackal you will encounter random characters that can become your friends and use them at any time during the game. One of the main advantages to having these characters as friends is that they can come and save you at any time. However the minute you call them and they rescue you, their life becomes endangered. They will need to fight for their life to get back to the safe house and if they don’t survive they are gone for the rest of the game.
Platforms: PS3, XBOX 360, Windows
Call Of Duty: World At War
Call Of Duty: World At War is set in the final battles of World War II involving the U.S., Japan, the Soviet Union, and Nazi Germany. The setting for this Call Of Duty is far different from the super popular Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare which had gamers wondering if World At War would be any good. As it turns out World At War is just as good as Modern Warfare and looks just as great! The online gameplay is one of best and its no doubt why its one of the best selling games.
Platforms: PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, Windows, Wii
And so thats a list of top games of 2008, if you think I missed some let me know. Here is a list of games to be on the look out for in 2009 Halo Wars, BioShock 2: Sea Of Dreams, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Velvet Assassin, and Wolfenstein.
